That is as long as the design passes a review by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), cycling’s global governing body. Team Visma-Lease a Bike riders debuted the large helmet at the Tirreno-Adriatico prologue in Italy on Monday. However, on Tuesday, the UCI referenced the new design while announcing a review into its rules around helmets in competitions. As part of its helmet regulations, the UCI insists that all helmets used by professional riders are also available to the public. CNN —US women’s cycling team Cynisca has been suspended by the International Cycling Union (UCI), the sport’s global governing body, for perpetrating a “fraud” and dressing a mechanic as a rider in order to avoid disqualification from a race. “The above-mentioned members of the team were therefore all found to have participated in a fraud under article 12.4.008 of the UCI Regulations, with different levels of implication,” the UCI statement read. Van Haute, Barrett and Hicks no longer appear on Cynisca’s website as part of the 2024 roster and it is unclear if they have left the team. CNN has reached out to Cynisca Cycling for comment on the ruling and whether those individuals have left the team. The UCI said Van Haute “was found to be the main perpetrator” and suspended from all cycling activity until December 31, 2025, as well as being fined.

Italian banking shares took a beating on Tuesday morning after Italy's cabinet approved a 40% windfall tax on lenders' profits in 2023. As of around 9:45 a.m. in Rome, BPER Banca shares had plunged 8% and Intesa Sanpaolo was down 7%, while Banco BPM, UniCredit and Finecobank all dropped more than 6%. The one-off tax on extra profits will be equal to around 19% of banks' net profits for the year, analysts at Citi estimated based on currently available data. "We see this tax as substantially negative for banks given both the impact on capital and profit as well as for cost of equity of bank shares. Banks are required to pay the tax within six months after the end of the financial year.

A nine-rider breakaway group, which was seven minutes ahead of the main bunch, was approaching the Crow Road climb on the route from Edinburgh to Glasgow. Police Scotland said their Protest Removal Team had arrested five protesters. The race was allowed to continue on towards Glasgow at 12.16pm with the leading group starting first in order to preserve their time advantage. Dygert, the golden girl of American cycling, reduced the individual time trial field to also-rans on the opening day of the UCI World Championships in Glasgow. Dygert, whose marriage to cyclist Logan Owen ended in divorce in 2020, has had three surgeries on her leg. Dygert has further opportunities to grow her medal collection in Glasgow, in the track team pursuit and then in the women's road time race and time trial. Next up for me is the team pursuit where the girls and I are focused on bringing home another medal for the U.S.

Archibald, whose first ventures in track cycling were at the Glasgow velodrome, will be part of a British track team looking to flex their muscles ahead of the Paris Olympics. Britain were only fifth in the medals table at last year's track world championships in Paris with three golds -- the men's team pursuit, men's omnium and women's points race. CNN —Swiss cyclist Gino Mäder has died aged 26 following a crash on the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse, his Bahrain Victorious team announced on Friday. Almost 200 kilometers into the race, Mäder crashed at high speed with American rider Magnus Sheffield, race organizers said in a statement on Thursday. “On Friday 16th June, following a very serious crash during stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse, Gino lost his battle to recover from the severe injuries he sustained,” Bahrain Victorious said in a statement. Mäder, who has been riding for Bahrain Victorious since 2021, previously won stages of the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de Suisse. “We are devastated by the loss of our exceptional cyclist, Gino Mäder,” said Milan Erzen, managing director of Bahrain Victorious.

CNN —A major glacier in northwest Greenland is interacting with the ocean tides, scientists reported Monday, resulting in previously unaccounted-for melting and potentially faster sea level rise. This is an important finding: The traditional view among scientists was that the grounding line did not migrate with the tides – and this introduces another major source of melting that could be accelerating sea level rise. Between 2016 and 2022, warmer tidal cycles melted a 670-foot-tall hole in the underside of the glacier along the grounding line — big enough that two Statues of Liberty could be stacked on top of one another inside it. The study raises more concerns for the already worrisome prospect of sea level rise, which threatens coastlines around the world. Greenland’s melting ice is the single largest contributor to sea level rise, according to NASA, which has been accelerating in recent years.

May 4 (Reuters) - The governing body of cycling (UCI) has agreed to "re-open consultation" around transgender women competing in elite female events. The decision was prompted by American Austin Killips becoming the first transgender rider to win a UCI women's stage race. "The UCI's objective remains the same: to take into consideration... the desire of transgender athletes to practice cycling. "The UCI also hears the voices of female athletes and their concerns about an equal playing field for competitors, and will take into account all elements, including the evolution of scientific knowledge." The UCI toughened its rules for transgender women to compete in its events last year, halving the maximum permitted plasma testosterone level to 2.5 nanomoles per litre and doubling the transition period to 24 months.

CNN —Cycling’s governing body – the UCI – has defended its transgender policy after Austin Killips won overall victory in the recent Tour of the Gila in New Mexico. Killips is the first openly transgender woman to win an official UCI women’s stage race, according to the Tour of the Gila website. Killips also won the Queen of the Mountains polka dot jersey, which is awarded to the best climber. “The UCI acknowledges that transgender athletes may wish to compete in accordance with their gender identity,” the governing body said in a statement sent to CNN on Wednesday. Among the critics of Killips’ victory on Sunday was former Olympic cyclist Inga Thompson, who said on Twitter that the UCI is “effectively killing off women’s cycling” with its policy on transgender athletes competing in women’s categories.
